Stop Online Piracy Act

It's a bad idea.

I'm all for protecting the rights of artists and intellectual property, but I believe it is the responsibility of the individual websites and owners to protect its users.  And the burden is on the user/consumer to make intelligent, researched decisions.  I know I'm oversimplifying, but you get the point.  Leaving the policing up to Uncle Sam will just really fuck things up.

I do not trust laws that in any way, shape or form begin to infringe on free speech and artistic expression.  There are too many dangerous agendas out there.  Someone, something, some cunt always turns these laws upside down; they find loopholes and back doors to expedite agendas that ultimately do more damage than good.

Take a hard look at the Patriot Act.

No, I don't have the solution.  I just know SOPA isn't it.  So I support Wikipedia and the others who are blacking out today.

As a Canadian, yes, the evil, lawless, pirate laden country that sits on top of the US, I can say that there are many up here that are vehemently opposed to SOPA/PIPA. We are opposed on a variety of levels, not the least of which is that the internet, at its heart, is about the FREE exchange of ideas and information. Once it comes under the scrutiny of entities that have other agendas .... well .. shit tends to hit the fan!

Right on Mr. Sutter!! We pay unGodly amounts of money just to have Internet. I personally don't download illegally, but to have this infringement is just unconstitutional. Thank you for showing that it's not all Hollywood trying to get this done!!

My Name is Jerry, and I believe that what you said about SOPA is !00% correct, to many puppeteers behind the scenes pulling the strings to make a law such as SOPA or PIPA a way to pirate there own personal beliefs on how the world should act. I am neither a true believer in religion nor do I personally put all my eggs in the thought of science alone. But I do feel either way people have to understand that you cant police life, you cant protect everyone's "artistic and intellectual property with a blanket law, especially when it endangers people to act freely and think outside the box. I support the Blackout and I do not and will not ever support SOPA or any of its ignorant counterparts that appear in the future.

I agree. I know SOPA is not the answer to this and I have seen my work show up on pirate book sites.

This bill disturbs me. It's well intended but it has the potential to be misused. And it will be misused for just the reasons you pointed out.

Owners of websites have the ability to keep their intellectual property from being usurped. The government does NOT need to do this for us.

Didn't we learn anything from Orwell's 1984 and Animal Farm? Power corrupts. Absolute power corrupts absolutely.

And for those who wonder who they're gonna find anything with the searach engines shut down, here's an old fashioned answer for all y'all.

Go to the library. Let your fingers do the walking through the card catalouge. Get to know Dewey the Decimal System. Open a book, Encyclopedias have a wealth of knowledge. Use 'em.

And don't support the asshat pirates. A law with no teeth has little bite.

I am a constituent, and I oppose SOPA and PIPA. Why?

SOPA and PIPA would put the burden on website owners to police user-contributed material and call for the unnecessary blocking of entire sites. Small sites won't have sufficient resources to defend themselves. Big media companies may seek to cut off funding sources for their foreign competitors, even if copyright isn't being infringed. Foreign sites will be blacklisted, which means they won't show up in major search engines. SOPA and PIPA would build a framework for future restrictions and suppression.

In a world in which politicians regulate the Internet based on the influence of big money, Wikipedia — and sites like it — cannot survive.

Congress says it's trying to protect the rights of copyright owners, but the "cure" that SOPA and PIPA represent is worse than the disease. SOPA and PIPA are not the answer: they would fatally damage the free and open Internet.

I agree with you. As Paulo Coelho says: "The terrible ignorance in which live these days governments and entertainment industries, imposing laws that censor the advancement of culture and development in the network. Because they think that, for example, if music is available free, people will not buy the CD. Many sell now even more, thanks to the bad-called "piracy", but if the work is good, if it's worth, you end up buying the original work. It only is a change in how to distribute. Sharing is not stealing, is a right of human history. "
"When you eat an orange, you will return to buy another. In this case, makes sense to charge at the time of the sale of the product. For art, you do not buy paper, paints, brushes, canvas, or musical notes, but the idea that arises from the combination of such elements. "Piracy" may be your first contact with the artist's work. If the first idea is good, you want to save your house, an idea consistent not need protection. The rest is gain or ignorance."
Here in Latin America, SOA not on FX right now and I'm a huge fan of the show. Only Amazon sells the full seasons but for me that is very difficult, because I live in Venezuela where there isn't easy access to U.S. $ for online shopping, I'll have to juggle! I think that piracy helps the industry because it helps us get closer to you, for example, I watch the episodes online but I also want and I'd like to buy the original DVDs of the show , which I have also sought but nobody here knows the show. Arrg! This looks like a jungle! What would I do without piracy? I'd be dead!
So sorry for my English. I don't speak it. Just I try.
Love

As a librarian in B.C Canada, our mission statement and policy is 'Intellectual Freedom'.

I wrote papers on this statement, so much good and bad can be taken from it. Such an interesting topic. Your blog is so similar to this subject.

Good luck to all on this debate.

I agree piracy is bad, I admit I do it. Why? Well I'm in Australia, so? So, we only just aired SOA season 1! So yes when the current season is aired in the US, I jump on the internet to download and watch it! I support where I can, buy cd's, buy dvd's, but at the end of the day, the prices for those in Australia are ridiculous!Sometimes the hard truth is, the artists that sit in their mansions, with chefs, nannies, maids scream out for us to support them buy buying, yet we see the millions they rake in.....hmmmm makes you think! Thanks Rachel

There has to be a better way of dealing with this. I do not support what is the start of an action that could black out so much of what we use. As far as foreign search engines you can get them translated and some of the stuff is good so why get rid of them. Also on the library front, I was horrible at reading, still am, but I do try now and then to read, however since the internet I read more news than I ever have because it is in my face. I have never been very good at research and when the internet came about, and since then, I have done more reading than I did in my youth and raising 4 children. If this went through I might as well go back to the 80's & 90's before internet because I would not pick up a paper or really read what I can due to the inability to read stuff on paper. I can see the web pages so much better. So I have picked up a book/encyclopedia and have read but I prefer to read off the internet. I might not see or spot interesting things if I read it in a paper however with the internet I am able to read about things I normally would not. I know I am repeating myself here but the bottom line is without the internets vast ability to reach places that I am not capable of, and hell who knows if I ever will, of getting to I would be lost, starved and deprived of the privilege.

SOPA/PIPA CAN KISS MY ASS! For without the internet many of us will be crippled!

On the Piracy front? like what so many others have said, it is their only outlet for getting things they would not be able to get. Again the crippling idea of inability to seek out and eventually purchase products may it be consumable or not. Also perhaps just a way to see if they may like the product, music, show/movie, even book. In these times one can not just go out and buy and take back as easily so piracy has the ability to "try" the product out before we go and buy.

okay I think I am done. Bottom line I agree with you sutter.

Dont forget ACTA: it allows authorities to check your MP3 player for pirated copies while at an airport.

Love the sons Ken. Watching season three right now on blu ray and its beautiful! On the topic of laws? Laws are need to predict all the people that want to ride the gravy train. Their are lots of people that want govt handouts. Its the reality. But we all have to pay from the checkbook to watching 30 minutes of marketing goop. It is what it is...Laws are to reign in greedy greedy people. Wish it didn't have to happen...but hey the ATF needs jobs too! he he :). By the way, my good friend and i keep saying we'd love to come party with the sons but we concluded...after about 24 hours of being treated like old ladys (or getting drunk and doing who knows what....) we'd probably want to come back to suburbia. But its A super fantasy.
