I've returned to my office in the asshole of North Hollywood. Feels like only yesterday that season 4 ended (that's sarcasm). Taking meetings, hiring a couple new writers. Slowly slipping on the leathers. And the ball-gag.
I'm back with my writing team at the end of the month and we'll go back into production mid-May.
Here's what I know about season 5. No spoilers. Just thematics. I've always seen the show as the Prince's journey. Jax is a man, but he's been unsure of the kind of man he will be. He has yet to decide on his legacy. Season 5 will force him to make those decisions. This season will be a pivotal one in the arc of the series. Not that all the seasons haven't been essential in shaping the mythology, but this season will begin to lay track for how the series ends. In a feature film, season 5 would be the end of act two. Where the hero has been faced with the primary conflict and obstacles and is forced to make a decision that either ends well or not-so-well.
I see season 5 as being a more deliberate season. I'm not sure how to expand upon that other to say that the decisions our hero makes will be less impulsive and more permanent. The stakes will be ratcheted up while the pace will be slowed down. Not that we won't have all the pulpy goodness we have every season (we will still blow shit up), it'll just have a different rhythm.
I'm also working with the network, studio and home entertainment group to get something to the fans much earlier this season. Some kind of behind-the-scenes project that will plug folks back in as early as June. I know how long of a wait it is to September and I'm thinking of a weekly segment with the actors that teases the new season without spoiling. Basically bringing you into our world as we produce the show. We'll make it available on the app, the website and I'm hoping to actually get it on air (although that's me talking out of my ass right now). I'll keep you posted about that and anything else that falls out of my ass.
And I'll try to blog more. Twitter is really spoiling my blogging. Every time I think of something to blog, I'll say, "fuck it", and tweet the 140-character version. My father was right, I'm a fat, lazy fuck.
Happy new year, bitc...
Oh, yeah, one of my new year's resolutions is not to call my kids, "bitches". I'm lumping you into that as well.
Happy new year, kids.

WICKED AWESOMENESS!!!!!!!
Thank you for keeping us in the loop and good luck with season five!
I CANNOT WAIT to see what your crazy mind produces for us in Season 5! xoxo
Thanks Kurt for the update on season 5. I like the idea of updates from the guys and gals, Great idea. My best wishes for you, Katey and the kids. All yer fans love ya and know they are waitin not so patiently I may add, for season 5. ML&R Butch Gillette. SOAFFSOA.
THANK YOU! Now I can stop harrassing you via the 140 characters on the Twitter machine. Looking forward to June already, mostly for the S5 behind-the-scenes project and because it's my birthday month (yes, I am aware how narcissistic that makes me!) And while we are the topic - Happy Birthday to your youngest!
Brittany @brittswanstrom
You granted my wish, thank you!
SOA must be a never ending story in your head even in the hiatus time, so many scenarios and directions to go. I don't know how you do it. Thank you for your loyalty to your fans by thinking of some SOA entertainment during the off air time. It is a big break for us (in between seasons) but I am sure not for you.
We got a lot of blog action from you when you dialed off twitter which I loved, but I missed you on twitter more. Those spontaneous, opinionated tweets made my day, but also got you in trouble. If there is a way of continuing those tweets without getting in trouble I would love it.
Keep it real.
P.S. Are you sure you want to cut out the word bitches? Damon Lindelof just renamed your show 'Sons of Bitches'
My explanation for my fandom tends to be, "SOA bewitches me to my very core." And it really does, so your plan to plug fans in sooner is thrilling. The first four seasons have flown by, and to think that we're halfway through the series is heartbreaking. Anything extra I can get out of this ride, I will take with much enthusiasm.
I also love that you've managed to create a cast and crew that not only has unmatched talent, but seems to be comprised of very genuine, decent people. It's a beautiful thing you've got, and I thank you for taking your fans on the ride with you. I am so anxious for what's in store for this climactic Season 5!
thanks pop ;)
Thanks for the updates on the shit coming out your ass, I mean the insight into the direction of the season and the behind-the-scenes stuff. ;) I feel like the time between each season is a long-ass, hellish wait.
Got the first 2 seasons for Christmas and have been re-watching. You all have created classic material that will last.
Thank you. I love the updates. You could do behind the scenes or even continue WTF Sutter; we have plenty of questions! I'm sure we will enjoy whatever you do. Thank you again for an amazing show.
AHHHHH! A blog from y'all at last! I was goin' through major Sutterink withdrawal from very limited tweets from you, no blog in four weeks, and no SOA on tee vee! Worse than a junkie, I tell ya.
As you're aware, continuing the fight against the purveyors of bootleg S4 DVDs. Just because I've already been one of your chosen doesn't mean the fight won't continue.
Love the idea of some in production info - not just from you, but the cast/crew/staff. Not that WTFSutters aren't looked forward to; they are. It gave us all another insight into the show, production, etc.
And if y'all can do anything on air besides the commercials, why not?
Gee, I'm not one of your 'bitches' any more? But y'all referred to me as a kid. I accept that.
See you on the twitterverse, and thanks again for choosin' me. I had a blast. All your cast are wonderful people, even if all they have time to do is meet/greet (Kim and Theo will vouch for that).
Purrs and whisker kisses to one and all.
Thanks Kurt you are so funny and I really needed a laugh right now. My friends and I are looking forward to season 5. We all know it will be awesome!

WHAT?
That would be amazing. That would mean I wouldn't need to have a baby to keep myself occupied during the long hiatus.
Thank you for brightening my day, Kurt. You do have a heart -LOL- and a big one!
I'm very appreciative of how much you take your fans into considerations - few peeps in the "BIZ" do that.
Gracias

If you need some hard core biker music let me know,
Check out Biker Joe Warren, Joe is no longer with us, but his music lives on.
Thanks Frank K.
Thanks for the update. Can't wait for the show to start. Been filling my lag time from the show with...yes... getting my remodeling done in my upstairs. My kids(who are actually not kids anymore) think I am nuts with how I feel about the show. Never been hooked on a show before. I was really bad at the end of season 4. Paced and paced the floor and clock watching til the finale episode of the season came on. Told everyone it felt like I was waiting impatiently for a blind date to show up. Even accidentally had to pour a few White Russians down my throat til the show came on. Good grief. And...think I got my daughter hooked. She borrowed my seasons 1 and 2 and took them home to watch. Which reminds me..the damn shithead has not returned them yet. Just wish I lived closer to everyone so I could meet and greet and whatnot. But anyhoots...keep up the good work. Everyone is awesome. Job well done!!

You might not call us or your kids bitches, but I know you'll make liberal use of "cunts."
As for the actors doing video blogs, that would be cool, but something I have to suggest for during the season (which may not be what you're looking for since it seems like you want something you can show during the summer when the show is off air) is writers doing little clips on what inspired them to write each episode. The show Southland on TNT did this for season 3, where the writer for each episode talked about what influenced them to write the episode's story, character development in the episode, how these things relate to the episode title, etc. I'm not sure this would work for a show like Sons, which has more serialized plot suspense than a cop show like Southland, but I think it would be interesting to get a look into the writer's room.
Thanks Kurt on the preview writing for Season 5. I'm a black woman who would like to know if you're gonna be bringing any black characters having to do with the MC even though its suppose to be an all white club? I'm a huge fan and also a rider and I would like to know where they are holding casting calls for Season 5 for new characters.
I would give my right nut (new half sack) to be on this writing or production team. I am a 48 year old retired combat veteran, and harley riding pain in the ass. Also currently a college student with nothing to do this summer. Hire me!!! I'm cheap, and I've really been blownup, fired weapons and perfect resume for SAMCRO.@kholland007

SOA is my current favorite show in this TV wasteland. Keep up the great work!
I know this...always great writing. We are always on edge. I've never watched a show where I could not wait til next week.
The best show I have ever watched!! Why hasn't this show one awards???? Omg It is so incredible!!! Please never cancel this show! I can't just name one thing that is greater than the other. The actors, the story lines are all brilliant!!
Kurt Sutter you are amazing!!! I am your biggest fan!!! Keep up the incredible work up!!! We send you Canada love!!!
Can you get Brad Pitt to play himself, picking up pieces of a Galindo Cartel hit in his yard?
My husband and I got married in November, and used three songs from Sons of Anarchy episodes in our wedding. It's our favorite show, and one of things we bonded over.
That bit of useless trivia/praise being said, I absolutely cannot wait for season 5. I'm ready for more of Jax's "adult" self to form, and to see how that shapes his family and the club.
It will be a long wait til September, so I think we'll all appreciate any little thing you can give us in the months to come!
Opie, He is the most identifiable character still. I hope you don't kill him off. Until next season, in my head, he will be on his bike, nomading it, with highway man playing over and over, in black and white. Keep up the wonderful work Kurt, where ever you take the show, the fans will still love it.
OMG- you rock out with your cock out all the time- i too am trying not to call my kids Bitches- haha- my hubby and i are huge fans - would ever considor doing a contest of some kind where a fan gets to do a small scene - holy hell i would just die to do a tiny walk on or something with the Prince as you call him- to me he is the King- JAX. lOVE YOU AND THANK YOU KATHY
I have to say thank you for such an awesome series. My hubby and I love it! I have to say coming from a similar back ground as some of the characters in the series it is pretty much spot on in behavior. I know it takes a while to write such a brilliantly thought out series such as SOA, but it is killing me to have to wait so long to see the next set of episodes in season 6! My husband really doesn't like series nor do I but I have to say we have been hooked totally by SOA, It is just cool. It is one of the few things on TV that my husband, who is very ill, will stay up to watch and look forward to the next episode. Not to mention that the places you mention in the show are no more than 10 miles from our home (Rogue River)That makes it even better! Thanks Loyal Fans Teresa & Daren Wilder
Kurt, how are you so frakin' awesome!!! My boyfriend & I are big fans and have been since before the show started... We saw your promos beforehand & already had a fixation on outlaw culture & motorcycles (of course the vroom vroom)... When we discovered that you were creating SOA we thought, "finally! Some innovative never-before-done television..." We saw you guys both years at comic-con and you guys killed it! We look forward to the seasons to cum... Yes, SOA is like the orgasm of entertainment. Can't get enough!!! =) I love you my sensai of philosophy, art, writing & gibberjabber in 140-characters ;)...I hope to intern for you one day... never write for soa cuz I'd never want to touch something so excellent as is, but to learn from a person I admire, respect & clearly think is just too swag for words... Keep up the good work! Can't wait for S5!!!
Hello (:
Just would like to say I love your work, it's completely enticing and addiction worthy. I'm a new fan but have already blown through all 4 seasons and am on the edge of my seat waiting for number 5 to start. To cut to the point, I was just wondering are there any opportunities for fans to meet the cast? I know its a long shot since I live on the East Coast but I just didn't know if maybe they hold meet and greet type of things in Cali? Any information would be amazing (:
Thank you for your time and thank you for doing what you do !
Hi Mr Sutter I happened to buy all 3 season of SOA on black friday. My husband who is a biker received them as a gift. A few weeks later we took out season one to watch and where hooked! We watched all three seasons in the same month! Great dialog love the story line. The characters really grab you and hang on! I'm hoping to get season 4 on DVD to watch before season 5 starts so we can watch it as it happens. Thank you for an exciting, interesting show.
pmp
Kurt,
Your amazing man ;) Just wanted to tell you that. I haven't missed an episode since day 1 and I own all the seasons so far except 4 because the set hasn't came out yet (DUH!) I can't wait to see what season 5 has in store for the SOA Gang, I am so excited. Is it September YET?!? You Rock, keep doing what you do!
-Big Fan, Caity
Kurt... I am a 46 year old woman and relatively new fan. I had a brain fart and ended up in bum fucked Egypt for a few years with a bunch of back woods inbreds. I made it out alive to stay with my daughter (or bitch, ha) temporarily ...they were big SOA fans, so I started watching and got hooked. Then the sky opened up and dropped an awesome man into my life who is also a devotee. I still have some catching up to do, but we devoted the bulk of this weekend to watching the entire season 1 and I was not disappointed! The characters and story lines are so compelling. Katy's acting is wonderful. I believe it's the best I've ever seen her. Oh and when Otto fucked up that atf agent....that was poetry in motion. Your writing team is phenomenal and the lines delivered with perfect timing. Thanks for sharing your gift....we WILL be watching <3
