Some critics get it. Ken Tucker, Matt Zoller Seitz revel in the giddy truth. Sepinwall and others continue to bang their heads against a wall, applying a level of analysis that is best reserved for a David Simon show. The Wire, we ain't, nor do we aspire to be. For the record, SOA is an adrenalized soap opera, it's bloody pulp fiction with highly complex characters. Often, I think the depth of the characters, the emotionality of the writing and the amazing performances is what confuses critics. Those qualities put the show on par with other great dramas. But then I'll go and cut the balls off a clown or turn a plot point absurdly upside down and I will most certainly blow something the fuck up. It's those things that drive critics crazy. Why can't I just stay the course. Be what they want me to be -- measured and predictable.
So why don't I do that? Why lean so heavily on the pulp? Maybe this backstory will shed some light: When John Landgraf wanted to move ahead with SOA, he went to his then boss, Peter Chernin, and told him he was going to greenlight the show. Chernin told him it was a mistake. No one would watch a show about a bunch of dirtbag bikers. He thought it was a nasty, unpleasant world. But Landgraf knew the operatic Hamlet approach of my pitch might be able to avoid the ugly, meth-reality and deliver the thematic attractiveness of the subculture. Yes, the MC world can be a dark, brutal place. It doesn't have the glamor of the Mafia or the urban sway of street gangs. Chernin was right, a straight up drama, no matter how well done, wouldn't have lasted more than a season. I knew instinctively, as did John Landgraf, that dark humor and pulp operatic storytelling would be the best way to open up this world to viewers. That to balance the danger and brutality of the world, the show needed to be entertaining and, dare I say, fun. The truth is, I have a very healthy ego. I have no desire to run a show that only a few hundred thousand people watch. I'll go do theatre if I want an audience that size. My challenge as a showrunner, season after season, is to balance art and commerce. How do I keep the show rich, complex and authentic and yet entertain the fuck out of people? It sounds easy, but it's not. Trust me, it would be much easier to write a straight ahead drama to please the critics. You guys are easy. But I'm not writing the show to convince people how brilliant I am. I'm writing it to excite, thrill and engage an audience. And I can only hope that my talent as an artist and producer shine through.
Clearly, sometimes it doesn't. As I look at the WGA Award nominees this morning, I realize the thing that frustrates critics is probably the same thing that keeps us an arms-length away from awards. I'd confidently put the quality of our writing, acting and directing up against any other show. But the pulp, entertaining nature of Sons will always keep us a few rungs down the ladder from the obvious choices. Or maybe we just suck and I'm delusional. That's very possible.
Anyway, I'll keep writing the show the way I always have and hopefully the audience will continue to show up. And the critics will lament how imperfect and frustrating the show is to watch and yet they'll continue to watch it and write about it, week after week, after week, after week... it's almost as if they're being entertained.
I was going to tag this entry by calling them all cunts, but maybe that's a little harsh.
Half-cunts.

Amazing how they keep coming back when they profess not to like the pulp aspects. I love the show for all that pulpy goodness and black humor as well as the acting. I don't watch shows because of critical success, I watch to escape, enjoy and occasionally think.
Love the show which keeps me engaged & entertained. Eager for season 4 to come out on Netflix as I only have basic cable. Your essay is astutely hilarious!
I don't think calling the critics that don't get cunts is harsh....and calling them half cunts was being too nice. SOA isn't The Wire, you are right about that one. However, if it was.....I wouldn't watch it. Having grown up around an MC, I get it! It is not always drama and bullshit that you see in those stupid movies that try to portray what a MC is. It is family....best friends and sons....it is wives and daugthers and dare I saw, the crazy uncle that no one really claims but everybody loves (yes, I'm referring to Chuckie). You have done a really kick ass job of keeping SOA entertaining...I've watched it since the pilot episode aired never dreaming I would be sitting here dying for the 5th season to come out already (by the way.....loving the release clock you have...saves me the time of figuring out how long I have to wait.) So I say, to the critics you don't get it, fuck you cunts....it's not written for you!
As far as the critics go who the hell really cares, it sure isn't the fans. The fans make it clear we love the show. Not all of us agree with some of the things that happen but we love the show and won't/can't stop watching. You, the writers and,the crew work hard and are doing a great job. The superbly talented Cast such a joy to watch. The unexpected twist and turns, who lives, who dies, who stays who goes, are what makes SOA so FANtastic and so worth watching. If SOA were a straight up soap opera I don't think you would have the fan base you have now. To me soap opera's are about the same things, good and bad love stories, a lot of adultery, there repetitious and so f_ing boring. I've Never read that SOA is Boring by any critic in any of the reviews I've read, because It's Not. The critics always expect the obvious to happen and when it's not what they expected it makes them crazy.
To me that is why their nasty frustrated cuntbloggers and not creators/writers of a great show like You are. Can we say "jealous".
Can't wait for season 5. Please keep doing what your doing cause it's working for us SOA Fans.
Mr. Sutter....I wish I had your talent for writing...I don't know where to begin. The group Chicago has a great song "Critics Choice", I thought of their song when I read your post. I am not a critic...just a FAN. The word critic...criticism... ..value judgment. I'm not sure why any of us give someone else the power to sway our thoughts or opinions. I'm new to SOA...watched the first 3 seasons on netflix recently...my hubby was hooked "as most of us are"... after his first episode. he watched Seasons 1 & 2 in 2 days !!! When he started watching season 3...he said "Just tie on one episode with me Babe". I watched 5 episodes that night...I was officially hooked on SOA. Watching Season 3 first was interesting.
I wanted to tell you how much I love your words...your vision...and your absolutely delicious characters. You have a way of bringing out so many different emotions every episode. I laugh...I worry...I get angry...I cry...I hide my eyes sometimes. I don't know film lingo...but...your vision behind the camera is beautiful...the scenes with Jax at the cemetery and on the roof reading his father's words. POWERFUL....I guess I just wanted to say "Thanks"....for giving us all such a gift...insight into not a 'bikers' world...another side of humanity in all its love and tragedy...RAW and numbing !!! You said you wanted to write a part for your incredible wife to show the dramatic side of her talents...WOW..did you deliver !!! So once again..."Thanks, Mr. Sutter" for some of the most delicious drama I have EVER had the joy of watching in my life time. I only hope you find a way to keep it going for Season 6..7..8 !!!! God Bless you and your family !!!
Cindy
keep up the good work sutter! love the show! in fact it's my favorite show!
Hey Kurt,
keep up the good work, and don't care so much about what critics say. In the end , all that matters is that you did not sell yourself out but instead did it your way. I belive you are doing a great series and if those guys can't see it its their problem!
For you to think that you're short of brilliant or a half-smart guy just bums me out. FTW (Fuck The Wussies<--- wussies being critics that hide behind a close minded opinion and/or don't know real aptitude).
Negative critics are those that can't comprehend how talented you are. Some critics go by hype, popular buzz & he-said-she-said bullshit. Other critics actually are passionate about entertainment & the quality presented. Through your writing: screenplays, blogs & even Twitter; you inspire me & philosophically teach me the importance of writing as an art. I feel you understand why critics critique & why some may dissect SOA a tad too much. Think of SOA as a pig in science class. Dissecting the pig some students may not realize what's being taught or expressed. Rather, some are grossed out that the pig was once even alive & brought in for project purposes or are unenthusiastic by the realness & rawness of the project. A thing they're not used to. Another sees the pig as art. An aspiring doctor or scientist may agree. Then there's those that have a love for learning something new & are interested in being entertained by lessons of life, reality & the imagination. To me, what attracts me to SOA & your writing is how creative & artistic you've made a fantasy become somewhat a reality. When I watch SOA I feel a connection to the stories. I am moved by the artistic approach including: the writing, acting & art direction. I am touched by these fictional characters, yet at times I laugh during some scenes. Why? Because I'm suppose to as the audience right? The drama keeps us involved, but again there's the "dirtbag bikers". There's times where situations are serious & thrilling, while other times they're funny & outrageous. Some talk vulgar, witty & satirical w/ feelings of sarcasm. The dialogue is realistic. It expresses a sense of humor believable for us as the audience to hear such a character deliver. I feel that it's hard for some people on the search for entertainment to find interest when ones prejudice towards a storyline beforehand. Did that even make sense?! Like you said, it's an adrenalized soap opera & bloody pulp fiction. To me, it has aspects of a soap operaish vibe due to its drama & love story lines, but it's certainly not a soap opera. It's a badass opera filled more w/ dirt & blood & less soap & cleanliness. Its pulp fiction conditions create a new take on the outlaw culture. Cowboys & bandits, ninjas, assassins, mafias & gangs have all been done. To me, SOA is those lifestyles combine. For the matriarch, a main character; to be raped & beaten w/ no other choice but to stay silent for the support, dedication & unremitting love for her family creates such an avant-garde take on drama on the small screen. To me you bring so much cutting-edge entertainment to our homes that its originality can never be done the same again. As for the critics, let them talk. To those critics that hate, well... they're also the type that would rat on a friend or tell the cops how they were the hero when in reality did nothing but complain about the loud noise w/out even checking to make sure things are okay outside. Haters can't be choosers although some wish to be. And lovers... well let us fuckin' continue to love. Love & respect is all we live for. Can't we just all agree to that? It amazes me how we as humans take into consideration so much of what others grade our talents & intelligence by. I guess it's human nature & we can't help it, but at the same time people have to remember that as the world revolves so does entertainment. Our morals & ethics abide yet evolve in some way as well. Our interests & passions always remain as "individual tastes & likes" but this is why the internet's great. It's a resource for each individual to share his/her opinions; good or bad. In my opinion, you are one of the most creative & innovative writers of this new era. You've brought to the small screen something golden & I applaud you for that.
P.S. The only other dramas on television my boyfriend & I watch are "Walking Dead", "Breaking Bad" & "Mad Men"... AND THE ONLY REASON WHY WE WATCH THE LATTER is because SOA Season 4 ended and there was nothing else left for us to watch... that's where Netflix comes in handy...
P.P.S. If you've ever watched "Workaholics" well just know that you're a tight-butthole in my opinion ;)
KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK! YOU KILL IT WITH THE CREATIVITY, WRITING & SHOW... LITERALLY! (literally being the killing aspect...) CAN'T WAIT TO SEE SEASON 5! YOU KEEP BRINGING ON THE G' SHIT & I'LL KEEP TALKING THE TALK. SOA TALK THAT IS. (my boyfriend & I give the dvd's every season break to friends & SOA virgins)
