SON BASHING

There's been a recent article that's surfaced bashing this season of Sons of Anarchy.  I haven't read it, but I'm told it borders on abusive.  I've gotten a lot of comments and tweets asking me to respond.  Here's what I know -- TV shows have unique characteristics and personalities.  What I've painfully learned is that you can't be all things to all people.

"Having said that" (my homage to last night's Curb), I also know that online reporters make coin for every "hit" they get.  That's why I always point viewers to reporters who support the show.  I want to help the people who help me.

So if I were a desperate columnist at a near-defunct magazine/site, I'd probably find something well-liked and pontificate a highly controversial point of view.  After all, conflict=drama=readers.  And let's face it, you can't go after a show like Mad Men, it's a near-perfect show and there's nothing really controversial at stake.  But there's enough moral gray area and highly dramatic plot complication on Sons to pick apart.  Truth is, if I needed to pay the rent, I would have written the same piece.   Hell, it's cyberspace, who knows, maybe I did.

Certain people man. They hate just to get there name out there. This season has been great, and I hope that it just keeps getting better as time goes by.

I did read it. It makes NO sense, and it appears she's never actually WATCHED the show. Her rant, and I'd call it that, cause it felt very personal and not at all like an objective review of, well, anything, seemed to be all about "oh bikers are bad" and she has not so great memories of growing up in the south. No one, and I mean no one, who has actually watched the show agreed with her, most of the comments were either fans vigorously defending the brilliance of SOA, or other misguided souls who never watched the show because, y'know, "bikers are bad."

Great post and funny too boot....

Off topic:

I read a post about Iam Mcshane who played Al Swearengen in HBO's Deadwood, being freed up, now that the show Kings has come to a end....

It seems like McShane would be a great Antagonist for SOA..... He's part in Deadwood was great....

Take care

Uh Huh yeah Kurt - truth is we know in your down time you are writing ALL the reviews - good, bad and all the bitter inter-fighting posts pointing at all the other urls in support of each cause. There, rent paid now time to make a tv show and not have to give a shit what anyone thinks of it-).

Extraordinarily smart plan that :-)

But seriously the reviews and so forth puzzle the hell out of me. If I go look at a big tv site with the letters tv in its name, I will see the show has a solid rating of 8, then every episode is slammed something shocking to lesser ratings under 7.

Nowhere do I see people doing anything but be amazed at this show - especially this season - and especially the last few episodes aired. Like Sepinwall I could literally dissect Service scene cut by scene cut and explain why it is one of the most brilliant and riveting pieces of television I have ever seen, but part of me jealously says well you know if they are so stupid they just don't see it well fuck em.

I think in this day and age of television something is lost on so many folk to ask them to sit and absorb something that happens one week and then not pay it off that week, nor necessarily even next week. Its really hard for those folk to go anything other than well that doesnt make sense, that's just a bunch of stupid bikers and what a dumb subject, I hate it; let's rate it down or abuse it.

What you do with Sons, and what Mad Man do IS the same in the sense that its a story arc that goes from episode to episode evolving and expanding; paying off and pulling back; explaining and then confusing; twisting and turning to an ultimate conclusion.

The difference to me is both the subject matter and the fact that you so deeply OWN these characters and make them so real, that in some ways like real people you can hate them, what they do, and what they stand for in an equally real way.

This perhaps you lose to those that cant understand, and also in part to those that do, but dont want to let these people get to them.

The rest of us are just utterly enthralled week after week by some of the smartest writing and very best acting that there is on TV today. And that's true ALL over the world - Im in New Zealand writing this.

Abusive? If we are talking about the one written the other day by H.H. then I'd say that "article" was misguided crap. Who spends 7 paragraphs giving a diatribe before even naming the show or even discussing anything having to do with the show.

As many other commenters on that blog pointed out she missed the whole point of the "men need to own their pussy" ideal espoused by Gemma. Its like the chip on this critic's shoulder caused her to knee-jerk that Gemma was speaking for a misogynistic view emanating from SOA. When in fact Clay completely destroyed the myth Gemma held to be true. Even a simpleton could see that.

Is it right to question the basic motives of wanting to live the outlaw lifestyle? Sure, go ahead. But to compare the SOA to The Sopranos and not "get" that it too was about similar groups fighting for power and money, is another glaring fault of that critic.

And I'd hardly call Jax Little Lord Fauntleroy considering that he is indeed a badass with a brain. Which is more than I could say for that critic.

I like the show more than I did last season.

Reading your posts is proof to me that even when you have a good script, a hit show (that brings the highest ratings in cable viewership), you still have to deal with bull#$@# to stay on top.

I appreciate your candidness and that you say what you feel. This season has been a real treat for SOA fans. F what the critics and those who think they are say.

As for Mad Men, I like that show too. But the season premiere was a disappointment for me so I stopped watching. I'll catch up with it when I can. Now SOA, that is my Tuesday ritual! I'm going to miss it.

I was the one who mentioned the "bitchy blog" on the other page. Thanks for pointing out what her real motivation was. I'll remember that and "ignore" her (and the horse that she rode in on!).
And, just for the record, I love Mad Men and Lost but if I had to choose, I'd pick SOA as the best show on television. It's a once-a-week thrill ride. It's hard to go and watch some formula drama after such good writing and performances. What do we fans need to do to influence the Emmy nominations in Katey's favor. She's so deserving. Is there a web site or a place we can address correspondence?

P.S. I signed up on twitter and am 'following' you, whatever that means :-)

Those who are wetting their pants over the Hav review are only doing exactly what she did - overreacting on the basis of personal taste rather than real content evaluation. The rant is shallow and poorly argued from a weak position, but it is not abusive, not stupid, and not without its moments.

Good point, I think we may be giving her way too much attention, which may have been her original intent. Lord knows it wasn't her incisive review.

I won't even search the article that bashes Sons of Anarchy.

It's ridiculous. Anyone who watches the show knows the high caliber of show that is presented every week.

Luckily, I have Alan Sepinwall's blog and review to comment on the excellent episode every Tuesday after the show.

But thanks for the idea! Can I bash someone else on my blog to actually get more readers? lol.. Thanks for the advice!

I'm thinking the "desperate columnist" aka D-Columnist is obviously a friend or relative of "D-girl." People like that HATE for others to be successful. Award Shows are another example, the shows with substance that actually make you think , are the shows / actors that aren't nominated. SOA is my addiction, and I want to ride that high for awhile. Thanks K.Sutter and crew.

I usually am not one to leave comments but I have to say SOA is awesome the writing, acting, directing & editing is flawlessly executed. I know it is fiction yet the show has made me root for the outlaw, brought me to tears & had me choking with laughter all in a 60 min timeframe. To the reviewers who don't get it screw them we the fans do. Kurt & company keep doing what you are doing and we will keep watching cause you have managed to bring the tv show from mediocraty to phenonminal.

I would have to imagine someone bashing the show hasn't watched it. Or is someone who can't appreciate a representation that has no part in themselves. Or nuance. This show has owned me since the first, but truly seared onto my heart with the last episode. So I had to come say thank you for it. Also second getting McShane on board, though I'm pretty happy hating Welliver at present.

I read the article of which Mr. Sutter speaks. The author obviously had not watched the season fully. If the article's author had, then Gemma and Tara's strength as female characters would have been noted. Hell, Gemma, the Queen, and her protegee/heiress apparent, Dr. Tara, are 2 of the most bad-ass women illuminating TV! I'll not gush over the amazing writing for these 2 or the way each is deftly portrayed by Katey Sagal and Maggie Siff, respectively, but Mr. Sutter created 2 characters who are paradigms of female strength, vulnerability and sensuality.

Kudos to SOA!

carly said...

You hit the nail on the head. That review was a mess, and I'm now sorry I "contributed" by clicking...the SOA Twitter fanbase is fantastic, and writers like Sepinwall, the commenters on TWOP, the Watchers of Anarchy Podcast, etc... all attest to just how solid a product you and your cast/crew are producing. You are supported and loved. It's deeply appreciated because it's quality, not reality TV fluff.

Anyone who would call SoA's "showdowns" simply "shoving matches" clearly isn't watching critically, or at all.

Rock on dude. Fuck 'em if they don't get it. More for us.

Cheers,

Carly

I may have stumbled upon that article (guided by my fellow TWOP'ers). After reading said article, several thoughts came into my head at once...

1. The author is a human quaalude.

2. The author is probably one of those people who are obsessed with Twilight and glittery vampires who are not at all macho.

3. The author watches Gray's Anatomy, Gossip Girl, and all the drivel on MTV, and would have everyone else do the same.

With only two episodes left this season, I'm already starting withdrawals.

Kurt,

I read this review (not on her site), and like many others will agree it's not as scathing as others make it out to be, it's just that she obviously is not be a fan of the subject matter because of some previous disposition toward bikers. Too bad, but I honestly can say that the more positive reviews that are out for SOA, someone will want to make a name for themselves by being a lone negative to mixed opinion.

Okay, everyone has a right to their opinion, but it stands to reason that it should at least be an opinion that is formed based on actual research on subject at hand. I love your show, and your blog, but as a reader of Ms. Havrilesky's, I should point out that the opening screed is a trademark of her column. She always begins with a two to three paragraph intro that has to do with whatever theme she's going with that week, and in this case she chose what she sees as directionless rebellion. Obviously this was informed by her own biases (which she basically copped to), and I'm not saying I agree, but this isn't anything new, nor was it particularly vicious. As you say, she looked for an angle, and clearly the show doesn't work for her, and that messy review is what came out.

Also, she did say nice things about the cast, and the acting in Gemma's confession scene. If I could speak to her I would defend SoA until blue in the face, but the near sycophantic need of fans to immediately kill her for her review is a little silly.

Now I'll go back to counting down the hours until tonight's episode.

As one who has watched every SOA episode for both seasons now, I read the HH review in Salon with interest. I've been reading her work for a lot longer than SOA has been on the air, and generally find her to be an excellent, thoughtful TV critic who writes in a snappy, entertaining style.

Although she took a rather too-personal tack in her review (we all have our biases, and apparently she's got one against bikers), I didn't see it as "abusive" in the least. I found her review smart and funny -- albeit in a snarky, backhanded way -- and she wasn't all wrong. In the end, she admitted to liking the show despite her own personal problems with some of the subject matter.

SOA is a very good show -- I look forward to it every week -- but it's not perfect. This season has been better than the first (Adam Arkin is a terrific addition, and the core cast has been wonderful) but there are still a few reality-based problems holding the show back, preventing it from hitting on all cylinders.

I listened to Kurt's interview by Tim Goodman (SF Chronicle TV critic), and was impressed by his attention to detail and insistence on "getting things right." That's great as far as it goes, but to my eye, it hasn't yet gone far enough -- there's plenty of room for improvement.

Put it this way: "Deadwood" and "The Wire" were truly great shows because (among other things) they made me believe everything that happened on screen -- I fully bought into the worlds those shows created. While "Sons" is very good, it too often wanders into dangerously unbelievable territory, thus undermining the show's credibility. Until that stops happening, "Sons" won't be all that it could -- and should -- be.

There's a big difference between "very good" and "great", but once SOA really does start getting everything right -- and I do believe Kurt is pushing hard to get there -- it could rank up there with those other legendary cable shows.

I'm looking forward to these last few episodes of Season 2, and seeing how things shake out. I'm also hoping Season 3 will mark the turning point when SOA finally takes care of business to become the truly great show we all want it to be.

This is a terrific blog, BTW -- a real breath of fresh air.

So, unfortunately, I think I need someone to explain to me curb your enthusiasm. is it just a boat i've missed or do i actually need someone to sit down and talk me through the funny bits of that show?

i really want to be a fan, i just can't get there on my own.

Anonymous said...

MT,

I would argue that you are missing the tonal point of Sons. As I said in the Goodman interview, the reason I root the show in reality is so I can tell epic stories. The stories are bigger than life intentionally. It is not The Wire nor even the shield. To harken back to my pretentious Hamlet prototype, it is Shakespearean. Epic. Pulpy. It will never be simple and raw like the "great" shows. In my eyes, that's already been done. I'm bored by that. I wanted SOA to be something different. Something more. I'm sorry it will therefore never be worthy of greatness in your eyes. But alas, I still have no desire to gouge them out. Mine either. Thanks for your thoughtful post.

Am wondering what "perfect" television shows Michael Taylor has written?

Juliet said...

I'm not sure which article you are referring to, but I did read something on Salon that was written by some dumb chick who obviously needed something to bitch about. I was SO close to posting a comment about her ignorance and then stopped myself because I realized, she just doesn't GET IT. SOA is ridiculously well written and it had me in the first episode and I'm pretty persnickety about what I spend my time watching.

The characters you have created are NOT necessarily good people (or rather their actions may not be what society deems as "good"), but the way it's written and the magnitude of the actor's abilities MAKE you care about them. Very few shows (especially drama) can pull that off successfully. JJ Abrams and David E. Kelley are the other 2creators that I can think of that have the ability to do that like you do.

SOA is intriguing and keeps me frothing at the mouth to find out what happens next. I LIVE for these kinds of shows (I'm a nerd, yes I know, but I also work in the biz so I know good shit when I see it!) because they keep you guessing and wanting more. Most of the time everything is "dumbed down" for the general public and I get infuriated by that crap. When television is saturated with shit like "Jon & Kate Plus 8," "The Hills" and all those pseudo reality shows, SOA stands out and is such a diamond in the rough.

I just hope you don't get tired of making this show! I'm about to lose LOST next year so I need something else to feed the need for brilliant TV!

Hey Kurt thanks for this blog it is great to feel connected to you and your creativity without feeling like a creep or groupie. And thanks for creating Gemma for Katey, she is beyond words.
I am a 22 year old graduate student in south eastern PA studying to be a children's and young adult librarian. I spend most of my day reading children's literature and talking to kids trying to analyze what will get them reading. It can be beyond frustrating especially with every parent convinced their kid is either "advanced" or a complete idiot.

The other day a tween boy came in asking me for a book about motorcycle gangs in California. I asked if he was an SOA fan and his face lit up like a Christmas tree then immediately became concerned. "Don't tell my mom," he said. I assured him I would do no such thing, citing the fictitious "patron-librarian confidentiality code". We continued to chat a little about the last episode while I pulled some books for him and I mentioned that you are originally from New Jersey. After he got over the shock that he had something in common with the demure librarian in sensible heels, he ended up checking out the Ralph Barger biography and a book about creative writing. So thank you for the hard work you do on the show and thanks for helping me get one more kid to read this week, I appreciate it.

Just watched tonight's episode. I get the feeling we're all getting tired of comparisons so just to keep the argument going I never had so many "wow" moments when I watched Deadwood and the Wire. And not gratuitous either. OK I'm done comparing. You cant compare art anyway and I truly think this show has elevated to that. It does seem shakespearean, shit I compared again, sorry.

For years, I could care less about television or the variety of entertainment offered in the medium. Sons of Anarchy changed all of that. Congrats on a highly entertaining show which I cannot turn off. Its obvious that the writing is genius, but the actors really sell your story well. It is going to be a pleasure to keep up with what you do in the future and you have earned a appreciative fan.

Slightly off topic here, but I just wanted to say how much I really love/appreciate both the show and this blog. It's not often you see somebody who gets so involved with their fans, especially enough to make blog posts so often, and even reply to comments.

As for the guy who doesn't think SoA is as good as the Wire, I would have to respectfully disagree. I've watched plenty of TV series, and the Wire has to be one of the most overrated shows ever in my opinion. I already like SoA more, without even having seen 2 full seasons. I just feel like there's more real emotion that comes through in SoA.

To the guy who wants to appreciate Curb, maybe it's just not your type of humor? I knew after I watched the first episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm that I loved it. I would suggest just watching a few more episodes to really get the feel of the show and decide whether or not you like it. I know a few people who don't like it, it's just not everybody has the same taste in comedy.

I was a little skeptical when the season first started out with such a bang but the intricate weaving of the story lines has kept me glued to my TV and even watching each episode again (thank the Goddess for OnDemand).

With regards to the commenter who thinks Ian McShane would be a good antagonist, I agree but would hope that some cable entity would pick it up so that we could enjoy a full blown Perlman v. McShane bash.

I hope SOA is renewed for next season and it doesn't take a full year to bring it back.

This may not be the appropriate place to ask this so I apologize if so but is there a release date established yet for the season 2 DVD? This show is so good that I am already lamenting the end of the season and there's still the finale to go.

These characters are so well written and acted it's amazing. It's the small things I notice that impress me the most. Opie staring down Stahl, Zoebelle flinching when Clays racks the slide on his pistol, things like that make it real.

Mr. Sutter,
First of all let me say congrats on the show. I have become totally addicted and angrily question WHY we have seasons and it sucks that I have to wait for the next one. I spent the day today catching up on the last couple of shows I had to DVR because of this little thing called reality (job, sleep, etc.) that requires me to live completely opposite of the way I would prefer, beginning at 4 a.m. Anyway, I won't bother with commenting on the nutjob's critique as it seems it has already been covered and I am in agreement. However, I am stuck on one of your comments and the word "pulp" you used. That word pretty much sums it up. People watch t.v. to escape the everyday, but recently it seems people live it and come home to watch it and re-live it again. Mundane indeed. One of the reason's I am so addicted to SOA is that it is fantastic television that transports me into the seedy underworld of this gang, and I can forget about reality. It's the same reason I got hooked on CSI: Miami. Often cheesy, but fiction with realistic undertones that instantly addicted me. Not to mention, I question the badass-ness of an aging skinny redhead with a sunglass fetish who gets his man everytime. Excellent. SOA transports me there and leaves me wanting more. This IS perfect television. Just real enough to make you question if "this or that" could really happen. Just fantasy enough to take your mind in a different direction than the boredom of watching something you just lived a few hours ago at work, school, or even home. SOA is the only t.v. that I really watch. In fact, I guess I spent a rather large sum of money on a t.v. I get to watch once a week for an hour or so.

Thanks for the show, and tell the suits to STFU.

One last thing, she is definitely the fierce mother.

I have now watched last nights episode so many times I am embarrased to actually admit the number. Everytime I think an episode cannot be as good as the one the week before BAM, you prove me wrong week after week.

I cannot comment enough about the absolute brillance of all the elements involved in SOA from the writing to the actors to the "gofers". This show truly is the "complete" package. Humor, drama, violence etc, that it reaches out, grabs me and I don't feel like I even breathe from start to finish.

In all the time that I have been watching tv this has never happened. Thank you for allowing me to experience something for the first time, for creating something so outstanding that everything before pales into comparison. For one hour a week I get to escape to Charming and that is what tv should do for its audience.

Maybe I should be a biased critic as well...LOL

Hope you and yours have a blessed Thanksgiving.

I dont know what article was bashing SOA, but whoever wrote is full of it. Ive been trying to get my girlfriend into the show. Ive been telling her its the best show out. At thanksgiving, the show came up in conversation and I asked my Mom if SOA was the best show ever. Her response: "Its definitely up there"

I mean, if a nice older Jewish woman like my Mom, who has never even been on a bike, thinks that SOA is a great show, there has to be something to it. Seriously. Compelling storyline. Great Acting. Overall execution.

After the convincing conversation with my Mom at Thanksgiving dinner, my girlfriend finally agreed to give SOA a chance. I am sure she is going to like it. I am going to start her on season 1.

I know that me and my family sincerely hope that SOA will come back for a third season and more. Keep up the great work.

I myself blog, I started blogging about four years ago, mainly in the adult industry. It let me get a lot of rage out and frustrations at my life. It allowed me to gain some acceptance. Off topic I know, but basically what I am trying to say is, screw those who hate.

I have encountered many who hate what I did, and still do to some extent. I have had many who claimed that my ideas were theirs and bashed on them. Bottom line is I was the one who took the action to put them out there, and some hate and bash just for the recognition.

Personally I love SOA, as a kid and early adult I hung with some really rough bikers on the east coast. To me though dramatized it gives a fairly accurate representation of a lifestyle that those who have lived it respect and those who have not still remained intrigued. Freedom on two wheels.

Thanks for the show Kurt, and personally I hope it keeps getting better, and to those who hate well we used to have this saying on this social site i used to frequent, it was " I love my haters, they make me famous".

Peace Love and Respect.

It's just like you said, whoever this writer is just looking to stir up some controversy. If he knows enough abut the show to write an entire article about it, something must be bringing him back to watch it every week. And if he is not watching every week, what the hell is he doing writing about it?

You know, I cannot stand the show "Murder She Wrote." I've tried to sit through it maybe three times but had to leave the room before it was over every time because I just couldn't stand it. But if I tried to sit here and convince fans of that show how bad that show is, I'd make a fool of myself because I'd have no understanding of the show.

Fuck the critics! The show speaks for itself. And like you said... who's to say they don't write a bunch of b.s. to get traffic to their site and make money.

I hope Mr. Sutter reads this so here goes.....

I'm a 34 year old wife & mother of two born and raised in Puerto Rico (go Theo!!). One night I was flipping through the channels and happened to catch the pilot. What draw me in was my curiosity to know what Peggy Bundy was doing surrounded by all those tattoos. Long story short, I was immediately hooked!! (I couldn't believe I had missed it the first time around...)

I'm 100% invested in the show.....The storytelling, the characters, the violence, the life was so interesting to me, obviously you hit a nerve.....by now I know that the freedom of doing what you want, when you want, 'cause you want to stuck with me. In a way, I guess if I were a bad-ass I would be just like them!!

I also want to point out that I've been married for eight years and Sons of Anarchy is the only TV show that I've been able to watch religiously with my husband (he's even letting his hair grow long....he think's he's Jax!!! and it looks great on him so thank you for that!!).

In closing I just want to state two things:
1. For the third season (which I'm counting on!!!) please charge more for the commercials so you don't have to run as many.....

2. Mr. Sutter you are a cruel, cruel man for leaving me hanging that way for a year!!!!!

Can't wait for SOA 3 (can we have it sooner than september???).....
